Its times like these when the business slows down that I think about where we have come from and where we are going. 2015 was a great year. We made lots of new friends and had many new clientes who are happy to have us at their event or portrait sitting. I am often asked about my history and how I got started.
My grandfather, Eli Hertzberg, was a professional photographer and portrait artist. He toaught my father how to use a camera and work in a darkroom. My father taught me. I became enamoured with portrait and event work at Temple University when I worked part time for a few of the Philadelphia area studios in the late eighties. But way before any of this could happen it turns out that we had a member of the family who would leave his mark on the industry and a star on Hollywood Boulevard.My great uncle is Herbert Kalmus. He was consiered the father of the Technicolor process and had a hand in inventing and managing it when the color process first came to the movies.
People who learn this somehow always ask how that has effected me. Well, not a whole bunch. I still play the powerball. Uncle Herbert didn't leave a fortune that I receive. I can say though that it has inspired me to learn more about my family history. All the more reason to capture great portraits. Record events and hold them in time. Or ask I am find of saying, "You live the moment... We'll capture it."
